The Kindred is the second novella in The Night School Vampire Hunter trilogy.
Angel and her friends at Ame Academy, a boarding school for preternatural and humans are back, and they are preparing for battle against the dark forces that kidnapped Angel’s younger brother Jordan. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.I hate having to give a bad review to any book because I know that to an author their book is like their child and to have it talked about in a negative way is very upsetting. I hope that this review will be looked at in a helpful way and not as an attack because it is definitely not meant in any hurtful way.
The premise of the book is actually pretty good. I did like the idea of the their being a school for supernatural kids that is blended in with a traditional school in such a way as to allow it to remain hidden. I also really liked that it was described like any other high school complete with that one group of girls that every past and future high school student will recognize. Whatever they are called at different schools; plastics, barbies, etc., we all know who `those' girls are and no story of any high school would be complete without their inclusion. The premise of this book is that a crazy supernatural person that wishes to take over the world and it is up to Angel and her friends to stop the threat. Pretty good idea for a book.
The problem that I have with the book all comes down to writing style and proofreading. This book is set up as several blog entries that are written mostly by the main character interspersed with flashbacks. There is nothing wrong with this format but I just felt that there was little thought put in to the writing of each post. Several times throughout the book there were instances where it seemed the author had forgotten a necessary detail and instead of going back and writing it in to past pages where it would be logical she would just tack it on as `oh, I forgot this detail but here it is now that you absolutely have to know it.' These entries felt so out of place and threw off the whole flow of the story. There were also several obvious grammatical errors that should have been caught in the proof reading. The one that sticks out in my mind, mainly because it drove me crazy, was the use of `maybe' instead of `may be'. These errors were so obvious and frustrating that it completely ruined the story for me.
I also wish that there would have been more character development. The basic story of the characters was told in the story but I never felt like I got to know the characters on a personal level. There is a huge potential for amazing characters there and I would love to see them become more real. Without better development of the characters I feel this book will just never be more than mediocre.
The one thing that I did actually like about this book is the ending. I never expected the book to end the way that it did. I do not want to give anything away but in a part of the book where you expect an epic fight the story goes in a completely different direction. Putting it like that makes it seem like it would be a big let down but it actually worked very well and left me stunned.
I am hoping that the author will do some more work on this book and then try republishing. With a little more work I feel this could actually be a really great read.

Kindred is a great sequel to Night School. I have been waiting to read Kindred, I loved reading the first one. It is set in the same format as the first one, in a blog post style, which I think is really neat.
Dasheen (aka Angel) with the help of her friends is trying to figure out a way to get her brother back from a group of Vampires. But that's not all, there is one that wants to release an ancient evil, a Wasiki that will destroy some of the others. Then there is her mysterious relationship with Rafael and how he fits into her background.
In this one, we are introduced to the Thunderkin, a creature/being I have never read about before. I really enjoyed reading about the Thunderkin and finding out how they fit into this story. Most of the book is told from Dasheen's point of view. Although we do get to read some from her friend Elin and from Rafael. I was a bit shocked by some of the background information we learned and the unique twists and turns that this book throws at you. I would have liked for this to be longer so we could have learned more about Dasheen's other friends backgrounds and just more happening in the present. Most of this novella was packed with the background of Dasheen, Rafael and the Thunderkin. I'm waiting patiently (ok trying to) for the third novella. I would love to see this be made into a longer series, love it that much!

Last time around, I wanted to find out more about Elin, Ismet and Bella Donna (half human/half vampire, Jinn and natural born vampire, respectively). I was happy to discover more about these ladies in Kindred. The end of the last novella saw Angel meet Rafael, literally the boy from her dreams, and we were left wondering what exactly their connection was. Yay for us girls, Rafael is back and ready to work with Angel.
Almost immediately, we learn that a big, bad fight is coming. Angel is still reeling from learning about the supernatural world and her central role as a Vampire Hunter. She has a unique ability for a Hunter; her blood kills vampires. She's also dealing with a younger brother who's mid transition, and she makes it her mission to save him from becoming a monster.
Of Angel's three supernatural friends, Elin was my favourite. Her fashion sense - toga style dresses teamed with combat boots, marks her out as one cool chick. I enjoyed reading about her Bulgarian background. I was also quite jealous of her ability to eat as much as she likes and never gain weight! Her line, "The whole Edward and Bella scenario doesn't work right now" had me smiling. Then we have Bella Donna who is superficial, cold and difficult to relate to, and Ismet, the wisest of the three, always analysing and planning. Each of these powerful woman works alongside Angel to save Jordan and protect the humans from supernatural attacks.
When I started to learn about Rafael's and Angel's past, I had the same initial ick reaction as when I read about Jacob and Renesmee in the Twilight books. But I got over it. ) Going back into Dasheen's/Angel's earlier life intrigued me, but I can't say much about it without giving away her story. I did have to pay keen attention to follow the different supernatural and preternatural races, but learning about the various lineages was interesting.
The phantom little girl with worms for a face has to get a mention. She freaked me out in the first book, and she still scares me. Kindred is a short and sweet read. Bring on book three I say. One element I would have liked to see more of was action in the form of a battle. A lot of Kindred delved into the past rather than moving forward, so I hope to see more action in the next instalment.
The first novella was simply a vampire story. Kindred goes beyond that. There are layers of mythology beneath the surface and a greater fantasy aspect here with godlike beings and all types of otherworldly creatures.
Quote that made me laugh
I moved to him and said, "Jordan, Jordan." Those surrounding him hissed, but after one look at Rafael who must have had on his evil Thunder face, they scampered away.
A quick and fun read that left me anticipating part three. I also enjoyed the blog style of this book.
