This is a travel memoir, a love story, and possibly, at times, a fable. Regardless of how you decide to classify the book, these are intimate and lush stories binding the landscapes with quirky characters, humor and compassion. To love travel is to love the world. Here you will encounter Lloyd Luckett who prefers to be called 'Paco' and whose grandfather was a Texas ranger who rode with Pancho Villa. There's the enchanting Marisol who consults a shaman to cure her ailment. A saint who appears in a primitive graveyard, and many other captivating characters and moments. Humor, beauty, melancholy, this collection has it all. This book seems like an effortless love letter to a place I couldn't have imagined, but that now seems almost familiar, even though I've never been there. Hamilton weaves tales that are far ranging in emotion and brings to vivid focus this exotic place that by the end feels almost like home. There are fish out of water stories, crazy adventures, and romantic pastiches. Truly a wonderful way to warm up the cold winter.
Tales of Choroní- Little Adventures in the Middle of Nowhere
While many of us are huddled by our fireplaces in the cold winter months of North America, I recommend reading the delightful short stories of William Hamilton set in the tropical climate of Venezuela. Hamilton and his Venezuelan born wife, Marisol, retired from a hectic life in New York and moved to a remote colonial village on the coast of Venezuela. Here they bought an overgrown plot of land, built their small dream house, and gradually became part of Choroní, a small fishing community full of eccentric characters. Among other things, Marisol helps organize the local festivals, while Bill researches the history of the area and takes hikes into the mountain jungle to find other small settlements and the ruins of abandoned haciendas. They also make trips into different regions of Venezuela to see varied landscapes and cultural areas. Along the way, they visit folk artists and collect their brightly painted sculptures of popular saints and scenes of Venezuelan festivals. William Hamilton’s Tales of Choroní Little Adventures in the Middle of Nowhere captures the essence of this witty and accomplished writer’s appreciation of the individuals, culture, and landscape of his adopted home.

Charming stories of a different kind of lifestyle in a remote paradise. A wonderful getaway.
This delightful book stays on my nightstand, because it's the only one I grab to read some of my favorite stories over again. It's escapism at its best, and many of the real-life characters of Choroni stay with me like old friends. Hamilton is in love with his surroundings and you will be, too.
Bill is the kind of wordsmith who has not only written cutlines and captions that sell products by communicating complex ideas - in just enough words to get the job done at a glance - but supervised the rest of the creative staff at a Mad Ave agency. You get a description of Coca-Cola red that tells you how and why the paint is applied, where, and makes you see it, and that's just a paragraph in a spare and engaging entry that moves you across mountain ranges, beside raging rivers, and through sleepy villages once ruled by hot-blooded tyrants and revolutionary filibusters. You emerge from the green hell of a tropical afternoon, only to gaze deeply into the vacant eyes of a very drunken and possibly brain-damaged gardener clinging to a bottle of aguardiente, the Caribbean word for firewater, who affirms and asserts with conviction that for him it is a truly venomous enemy just waiting to take his life away by uttering the name of a thoroughly undesirable and completely deadly snake that feeds on its prey in the underbrush. It's the work of a craftsman who knows how to tickle with the tip of his pen. Forget about it. He also taught English composition at a prep academy for lock-jaws. Read this book to sharpen your skills of description. The man is a natural born teacher of the craft who understands the rules well enough to show you how to break them gracefully and with the greatest effect. Tales of Choroni is not about Venezuela in a time of Chavez. It is. But it's also a timeless Venezuela. In the life of an aging expatriate.
The protagonist lives in a fishing village given way to tourism. And while they are little adventures, his is a verdant world where robust characters cross mountains and sometimes cross each other.
As I read, I kept searching for some sign of the author succumbing to tropical sentimentalities. Because I know he’s a fish out of water. Would there be some sign of Yankee ascendancy over the charming folkways?
Hamilton never breaks. He is an realist in love with a romance. He’s got stamina. Even when he doesn’t.
The characters are real. They charm, they frustrate, they take patience — and the old gent just keeps on moving, character to character, no judgements, writing with an unsung humanity. Like camouflage that you can see in relief and call by a Christian name. On a jungle trail. Or a pizza parlor. Or on a boat making headway at sea. Hamilton writes and I imagine A drunk standing and holding against the wind. I love him. Another character, a young european outdoorsman—a smug piece of s***. I loathe him, but William does not, he just intimates, feeling his age while you just know the young turk is thinking he never will.
There is something familiar about it all, but Hamilton spins these stories out in ways that can only happen in Choroni.
